Why Financial Advice Restores Confidence in Uncertain Times

There's a particular kind of tiredness that comes from cost-of-living headlines - not panic, exactly, just a quiet erosion of "what's the point in planning." If that sounds familiar, you're far from alone.

The growing "ambition gap" in UK households

St. James's Place's Real Life Advice Report found one in five UK adults (21%) now have no financial aspirations for the year ahead, up from just 13% six months earlier. One in four have none at all for the next decade. It's a sharp shift in a short space of time, and it says something about how heavy the last year has felt for a lot of people.

Short-term saving still dominates people's priorities, while retirement (arguably the thing that matters most in the long run) keeps slipping down the list.

Advice changes everything

Here's the encouraging part: ongoing financial advice more than doubles the likelihood of having a clear financial plan (68% vs 32%), and those with advice are twice as likely to prioritise long-term goals (29% vs 12%). Nearly one in five advised people prioritise retirement saving, versus just 8% without advice.

This isn't a one-off finding either, back in 2025, 51% of people with ongoing advice felt optimistic about the year ahead, against just 34% of those without.

Why advice boosts optimism

It's a bit like having a second pair of eyes on a puzzle you've been staring at too long. Advice can bring clarity, structure, and a longer-term view that's harder to hold onto when you're focused on this month's bills.

As Alexandra Loydon at SJP puts it: "Where families have access to ongoing financial advice, optimism increases, confidence grows, and conversations about money become more open and constructive."

What this means for you

If you've felt stuck, overwhelmed, or just unsure where to even begin, that's a genuinely common place to be. A conversation with an adviser won't remove uncertainty altogether, but it can help you feel more equipped to navigate it.

Full advice should be taken to evaluate the risks, consequences and suitability of any prospective fund or investment.
